Karsan Bhai Patel belonged to a middle class farmers family in Gujarat,
India. At age 21, he was working as a lab assistant. In 1969, he made
a washing powder with his own knowledge. He named his washing
powder "Nirma". Those days, HUL’s (Hindustan Unilever) Surf was
priced at 15 Rupees per kg. But he started selling his "Nirma" at 3.50
per kg.
.
The packing and the formulation took place in a 10x10 feet room in
his own house. While going from his house to office, he has to ride
his bicycle 15 kilometers. During that ride, he used to meet
shopkeepers and sell Nirma. Daily he sold 15-20 packets.
.
He continued this small business for the next three long years and
gradually his sales increased. In 1972, he was 100% confident
about his home-based business. He decided to take the next leap
and quit his job. Soon after that, he set up shop in Ahmedabad.
Within no time, Nirma established itself in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
By 1985, Nirma washing powder had become one of the most popular,
household detergents in many parts of the country. More than 18
years later, in 1990, Nirma launched their second product ‘Nirma
Super Detergent’. It was a grand success.
.
Within a short span of time, Nirma got more than 400 distributors
and over 2 Million retail outlets across the country.
.
A local made washing powder "Nirma" defeated an international
successful brand "Surf". Today Nirma has 18000+ employees and
revenues worth more than Rs.7,000 Crores. The Company expanded
to many countries. In 2005, Forbes magazine listed karsan bhai's
net worth as USD $640 million. In 1994, Karsan bhai established
Nirma University which includes technology, management, diploma
studies, pharmacy, science and law.
.
This is the grand success of a normal middle class man who used to
ride an old bicycle from home to office. Success does not come easily. Success does not like lazy people. Success comes to those people
who dedicate themselves to hard work, day and night.
