In India, the minimum consulting fees of any doctor is more than
100 rupees. But Dr Balasubramaniam from Coimbatore used to take
only 20 rupees from his patients.
Dr Balasubramaniam belonged to Coimbatore, India. Nearly
15 years ago, he started his own hospital. In the beginning,
he used to charge only 2 rupees as his consultation fees.
Later he increased it to 10 rupees. Two years ago, he increased
it to 20 rupees. He even gave injections and tablets without
charging extra money to his patients. People in his city called
him "twenty rupee doctor".
Daily 150 to 200 patients used to visit his hospital. He was a
living God to the poor and middle class people. He did not
spend his monthly income for his family. He used to spend all
the money, he took from patients, to pay the rent for the
hospital building and to buy medicines for the hospital.
Dr. Bala Subramaniam had always been punctual to his hospital.
He never took even a single day of leave because he did not
want to disappoint his patients.
Some of his patients were too poor. So Dr. Balasubramaniam
did not use to take even a single rupee from them. As usually
medicines were free for them.
A week ago (20th, November), patients gathered at his hospital
for treatment. But it was found to be closed for the first time.
