In old age, everyone wants to lead a peaceful and relaxed life at home, surrounded by a loving family. However Shila Ghosh has a different story.
She is now almost 87 years old. She lives in Kolkata, India. Her
husband used to work as a station master. He died many years ago.
Her son worked as an Upper-Division clerk at the Eastern Railways.
In 2010, he died in a car accident. After that everything changed in
her life. Now her grandson is jobless, her daughter-in-law is a kidney
patient, and she had to work to feed them.
Every afternoon, from her living place, she comes to the Exide
crossing on Chowringhee Road, in Howrah. she reaches to a
pavement outside Haldiram's shop. She sits on that pavement,
spreads her big clothe in front of her. There she arranges different
kinds of fried chips and sells them. Everyday she changes two buses
to reach this place. From after noon to night, she sells them and goes
back to her rented house by changing two buses. Everyday she earns
nearly 400 rupees to 600 rupees and maintains her family of four
members.
For the last six years, she has been working like this. She talks to
her customers in a friendly manner. She is very active and never lazy.
An interviewer asked her "where did you get this mental strength?"
She said " In a holy book, it is written, “Work is life. Do your work,
never think of the result.” This has been my source of mental strength" .
