Many people don't live in "today". They live in yesterdays and
tomorrows. We must know "The importance of Living in today".
.
In the spring of 1871, a young man picked up a book and read 21
words. Those words had a great effect on his future. He was a
medical student at the Montreal General Hospital, England. He
worried about passing the final examination, worried about what to
do, where to go, how to build up a practice, and how to make a living.
.
The 21 words that this young medical student read in 1871 helped
him to become the most famous physician of his generation. He
organised the world-famous Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
He became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford the highest
honour that can be given to any medical man in the British Empire.
He was knighted by the King of England. When he died, two huge
books containing 1,466 pages were required to tell the story of his life.
.
His name was Sir William Osier. He read those twenty-one words
from Thomas Carlyle that helped him lead a life free from worry.
Those words are "Our main business is not to see what lies dimly
at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand."
.
That means "Our main duty is not to see our worrying past and
anxious future, But to do our present work".
.
But many people do not do this thing. Many people always think
about the mistakes, wrongs they did in their past, the misfortunes
they got in the past, the problems and challenges they have to face
in the future. By thinking about their past and future, they forget to
live the present day.
.
There is an old saying "Dont cry over spilt milk". It means we should
not worry about the lost opportunities and past bad lucks. It seems
to be difficult to apply the old saying. But by concentrating on the
present day we can easily apply that principle.
.
Planning for future is essential. But planning for future and worrying
about future are different. The chief difference between planning
for future and worrying about future is this: "planning for future" deals
with causes and effects and leads to logical, and constructive output.
"Worrying about future" leads to tension and nervous breakdowns.
The best possible way to prepare for tomorrow is doing today's work
superbly today.
.
One of the most shocking things on our present way of life is that
half of our hospital beds are reserved for patients with nervous and
mental troubles. These patients have collapsed under the crushing
burden of accumulated yesterdays and fearful tomorrows. Yet a vast
majority of those people would be walking the streets today, leading
happy, useful lives, if they had only followed the words "Living in
present day".
.
One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of
us postpone living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden
over the horizon-instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming
outside our windows today.
.
A child says: "When I am a big boy." But what is that? The big boy
says: 'When I grow up.' And then, a grown up, he says: 'When I get
married.' But to be married, what is that after all? The thought
changes to 'When I'm able to retire." And then, when retirement
comes, he looks back over his lost life; somehow he has missed it all,
and it is gone. Life, is in the living, in the tissue of every day and hour.
But we learn it too late.
.
Thats why we should learn it now. We should live in today. we should
enjoy today. We should do our work superbly today. we have every
reason to be happy today. Today itself we can achieve many
successes in our daily activities. Today is our heaven.
